Promotion of young researchers

Close cooperation exists with the GRK 1874 "DIAMICOM". The new program for the promotion of junior scientists is based on the existing network of the Medical Faculty Mannheim and Heidelberg with the University of Groningen. Due to the high expertise in the field of diabetic microangiopathy (eye / kidney / nerve / basic mechanisms), this international graduate school with the University of Groningen has been rated as excellent by the DFG. The joint and reciprocal composition of the governing bodies of SFB 1118 and DIAMICOM guarantees exchange and synergy, as well as prevention of overlapping projects.

In the SFB 1118, the PhD students who meet the admission criteria for either HBIGS, the Helmholz funding programs of the DKFZ or the GRK 1874 will be accepted. The selection of doctoral students of DIAMICOM is also carried out together with HBIGS. Several SFB TP leaders belong to the Faculty of HBIGS.

The invitation to tender for doctoral theses is also mainly made via the HBIGS website.

In 2017, the PhD students were given the opportunity to organize their own symposium, during which they were able to present their own work to each other and also invite external speakers. As a result, young scientists were also able to gain experience that will help them to organize congresses or symposia - even without the infrastructure of an SFB. An important focus at this symposium was also equal opportunities.
